ICE Arrests Over 150 in Bay Area

ICE Director Condemns Oakland Mayor's “Reckless” Warning About Impending Raids

Homan said the Justice Department is looking into whether Schaaf obstructed justice and said her actions allowed immigrants who have committed crimes to remain in Oakland, making the community less safe. It's unclear exactly what that review entails.

Schaaf alerted residents that she had heard from multiple sources that ICE agents would be conducting enforcement operations in the Bay area imminently and urged those aliens who are in the country illegally to take precautions.

More than 100 of the people arrested had criminal records, including convictions for child sex crimes, weapons charges and assault, ICE said.

Justin Berton, a spokesman for Schaaf, said the mayor's office is unaware of any review and declined to comment further.

ICE acting director Thomas Homan told Fox & Friends that Schaaf's warning had allowed about 800 criminal immigrants to avoid capture.

On Tuesday, before agents had wrapped up the operation, Homan had said 864 immigrants with criminal histories are still at large despite the raids that led to arrests in cities including Stockton, Sacramento, San Francisco and Bay Point.

Federal immigration authorities said California's new sanctuary law forced this week's sweep that netted 232 illegal immigrants in the Bay Area - and set off a massive controversy after Oakland's mayor gave a public warning that may have helped hundreds of other migrants elude arrest.

The arrests come amid heightened tension between immigrants groups, their supporters and federal officials who recently blasted Oakland Mayor Libby Shaaf, who warned about impending raids.

It was unclear how many people would have eluded capture without the mayor's warning.

"As she stated it, it was her goal to make her community safe", Levenson said. Recent legislation has negatively impacted ICE operations in California by almost eliminating all cooperation and communication with our law enforcement partners in the state by prohibiting local law enforcement from contracting with the federal government to house detainees.

"I do not regret sharing this information", Schaaf added.

"It is Oakland's legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws", she said.

Among those at large are Oakland residents with multiple prior removals, said James Schwab, a spokesman for ICE in San Francisco, a field office that spans 49 counties from Bakersfield to the OR border. "We believe our community is safer when families stay together". All of those in violation of immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States.
