Lee Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson win Best Animated Film Oscar for Coco

"Muchisimas gracias a todos y que viva Mexico!" he said.

Exploding with the sights and sounds of Mexico's Day of the Dead - brightly painted skulls, orange marigold flowers, "ranchera" songs - "Coco" also gives cameos to numerous biggest figures in Mexican culture, from the painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera to the actress Dolores del Rio and the wrestler El Santo. "Representation matters", Unkrich said while accepting the trophy.

"A lot of things started to be said about Mexico and about Mexican-Americans that was unacceptable", he said. The win makes director Lee Unkrich only the fourth person to win twice in the Best Animated Feature category since its creation in 2002. His mother is from Jalisco, Mexico and his father is half-Mexican and grew up in California.

"It takes an awareness of the fact that you know strong storytellers come from all sorts of places".

Darla Anderson, the producer of "Coco", pointed to Molina backstage and told a room full of reporters: "This is the future".

But it worked: the film has grossed $740 million worldwide, winning a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, two Critics' Choice Awards and now the Oscar. The film was competing with 'Loving Vincent', 'The Boss Baby', 'Ferdinand', and 'The Breadwinner'.

The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel Rivera who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living.

Featuring an all-Latino cast, "Coco" has been described by Pixar filmmakers as a "love letter to Mexico". Coco features voice acting from Mozart in the Jungle star Gael García Bernal and Anthony Gonzalez, the young actor who plays Miguel.

"Coco" also was praised for its music.

There was no mention in the acceptance speeches of Pixar co-founder John Lasseter, who is taking a "six-month sabbatical" after acknowledging "missteps" in his workplace behavior. The movie also won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Remember Me".
