Proposal to end DACA will not affect Monday deadline

Mr. Trump announced the end of the DACA program - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals - previous year and urged Congress to pass an immigration bill that included protections for those who were brought to the USA illegally as children.

"The Democrats made the calculation to kick the can down the road and allow hundreds of thousands of us undocumented youth to live in uncertainty", said Maria Duarte, a DACA enrollee who walked with others from NY to Washington to protest congressional inaction. A nationwide injunction in January by U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco required the administration to resume renewals but does not apply to first-time applicants.

Trump initially announced back in September that he planned to end the Obama-era program, giving Congress six months to build a legislative policy mirroring his plans.

Among the Senate bills that failed to advance was a Trump-backed plan that would provide a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers - the almost 700,000 DACA registrants, plus 1.1 million who were eligible but did not register - in exchange for extra border security funding and dramatic curtailment of legal immigration.

A program that temporarily shields hundreds of thousands of young people from deportation was scheduled to end Monday but court orders have forced the Trump administration to keep issuing renewals, easing the sense of urgency.

Then last week, the Supreme Court denied an expedited hearing of the DACA case filed from the Trump administration and recommended that it go through the appeals court. Chris Van Hollen, and to your US representative.

The court battle removes some urgency surrounding Trump's Monday deadline but DACA recipients whose permits expired are still at risk while they wait for their renewals to be granted. Another 5,320 DACA permits expire in April and almost 14,000 more in May. Deportation arrests have surged more than 40 percent under Trump. That was a sharp departure from the Obama administration, which focused on those with criminal records.

The fight over DACA has sparked a grueling monthslong battle, one that has pitted Democrats in Congress against Republican lawmakers who say the program is an overreach of power.

"For myself, I worry because I am not sure about my future", said Lopez, a native of Mexico.

To qualify for DACA, created in 2012, DREAMers had to undergo a thorough background check, prove they arrived in the US before their 16th birthday, were 30 or younger, were attending school or in the military, and had not committed a felony or serious misdemeanor.
