Google is selling Zagat to an upstart restaurant review site

The Infatuation, which covers restaurants both in the USA and overseas, said it had its first profitable year in 2017.

This was about 25 years before Yelp existed, putting Zagat well ahead of its time in the world of crowdsourced, amateur restauraunt reviews. Since its founding by Tim and Nina Zagat in 1979 as a compilation of opinions about New York City restaurants by their own friends, Zagat has grown to become synonymous with restaurant reviews in cities across America and beyond. Google acquired Zagat in its entirety back in 2001, and given the continued relevance of the Zagat restaurant review brand in the interim, today's announcement won't likely change much.

The digital marketing specialist noted that Zagat is poised further expanding digitally with The Infatuation due to the latter's harnessed smartphone apps, Instagram hashtag and a texting recommendation service.

Google is getting out of the restaurant recommendation app business selling off the Zagat service they purchased in 2011 to restaurant discovery service The Infatuation. "The Infatuation is an innovative company that will be a terrific home for the Zagat brand".

The Infatuation, which uses an in-house team of reviewers to write up restaurants in major cities like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and London, is picking up the service for an undisclosed amount.

"How often does an iconic brand like Zagat become available?" said Chris Stang, a co-founder of The Infatuation. "We try to create a true connection with the audience". "Tim and I are very excited for Zagat's next chapter with The Infatuation", she said. "Their innovative approach, and their passion for helping people discover great restaurants and for building community line up with what we built with Zagat from the very beginning". Instead of looking to merge one brand into the other, The Infatuation says it plans to keep the brands distinct.
