Rey Mysterio Vs John Cena? Fastlane Rumors on Road to Wrestlemania

Ronda Rousey made a stunning debut at the Royal Rumble

Ronda Rousey made a stunning debut at the Royal Rumble

This proclamation brought out commissioner Shane McMahon and then general manager Daniel Bryan, who told Cena that if he does truly want in on the WWE title bout at the PPV, he'll have to earn it by defeating his opponent in the main event Tuesday night - Styles himself. While Brock Lesnar and Vince McMahon have had major disagreements in the past, and this week would not be the first time Lesnar has decided against showing up to Raw, it's worth noting Paul Heyman was also not in Anaheim on Monday. Per the stipulation, the WWE Fastlane main event will now be a Six-Pack Challenge with AJ defending against Cena, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin. He's never competed at WrestleMania and has gotten over so well with the crowd that he was part of the Elimination Chamber title match.

Big Match John along with SmackDown's authority figures opening up the show was a solid way to kick off the show. On "SmackDown Live", he earned his way into the six-man WWE Championship match that'll take place at Fastlane on March 11. Mysterio was backstage at the SmackDown live event this past Monday in San Diego and posted a photo after the show with Sin Cara. Naturally the in-house corwd was whipped up into something of a frenzy, as were most people watching at home if you're anything like us, as it seemed that finally we were going to get confirmation that The Deadman is not retired and that he will be returning in New Orleans. Might Undertaker answer Cena's challenge then?

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that The Undertaker vs. John Cena was still the plan when John cut his promo on Raw, and it looks like nothing has been changed in that regard.

Except the latest rumors suggest that this isn't all a ruse.

Cena announced Monday night, nearly 24 hours after he failed to earn a WrestleMania spot in the Elimination Chamber, that he was heading over to the blue brand to see if that could help his cause. The Undertaker happens, there's no question WWE did a great job of building up the anticipation for Tuesday's SmackDown Live.

But appetites had been whetted, and the words "Undertaker" and "Wrestlemania" are not usually uttered in the same sentence unless there is something in the pipeline.

However, he said that the match won't happen.

Cena and Mysterio were two of the biggest wrestling stars of the noughties - known as the Ruthless Aggression era in WWE. There's no word on whether or not this will actually come to fruition, but it'd likely upset fans who've been anticipating Nakamura vs. Styles from the moment both signed. Previous year when The Deadman failed to defeat Roman Reigns even though the match itself was pretty poor, what happened afterwards felt like the ideal send off.
