US Attorney General Jeff Sessions to make 'major sanctuary' jurisdiction announcement in Sacramento

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions to make 'major sanctuary' jurisdiction announcement in Sacramento

Attorney General Jeff Sessions slammed California's Democrat leadership for rejecting the rule of law, and for protecting criminal illegal immigrants.

Sacramento police say nobody was arrested in connection with the protests Wednesday outside a hotel where Sessions spoke to California law enforcement officials.

On February 24 Libby Schaaf, the mayor of Oakland, California issued an open warning to cities in the San Francisco Bay area that ICE was preparing a soon to be launched operation to round up vulnerable immigrants.

Sessions on Wednesday announced a Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit against California on Wednesday during a speech to the California Peace Officers' Association in Sacramento. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has said it will increase its presence in California, and Sessions wants to cut off funding to jurisdictions that won't cooperate. It says three state laws intentionally undermine federal immigration law: One bans police from asking people about their immigration status or participating in federal immigration enforcement activities. Speaking at a law enforcement event in Sacramento, Sessions did not mention Brown by name, but he did talk about what he considers the missteps of Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and state attorney general Xavier Beccera, saying California's position as a sanctuary state "directly and adversely impact the work of our federal officers". The Department of Justice declined to comment when asked this week about whether a probe was underway.

Sessions called the California laws "irrational, unfair and unconstitutional". "This is a portrait of dragnet-style immigration enforcement, which studies have shown time and time again makes communities less safe, not more".

"Our track record so far when it comes to any dispute with the federal government has been pretty good on this count", Becerra said Tuesday night.

California is home to the largest number of undocumented immigrants, almost one-quarter of the estimated 11 million in total across the United States. But the West Coast state has quickly developed a knack for resisting, mobilizing to fight against multiple Trump White House decisions including climate change denial, attempts to end legal marijuana, and various measures to deport immigrants. Of those arrested, 180 were either convicted criminals, had been issued a final order of removal and failed to depart the USA, or had been previously removed from the United States and returned, said the agency. "How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of law enforcement", Sessions said to the mayor. "It's not wise, it's not right and it will not stand". "Her actions support those who flout our laws and boldly validate the illegality", he said.

In the time since Donald Trump won the presidential election, there has been an increasing amount of tension between lawmakers in Washington DC and lawmakers in California.

In remarks during a press conference, Attorney General Becerra argued that California's laws deterring cooperation with ICE are constitutional. He said the mayor's alert allowed 800 "criminals" to escape ICE agents during a statewide sweep that netted 232 people.

"I understand that we have a wide variety of political opinions out there on immigration, but the law is in the books and its objective is clear".

In Sacramento this morning, Sessions questioned California's so-called "sanctuary state" policies.
