US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has criticised China's economic engagement in Africa, ahead of his first official visit to the continent. The visit will end March 13.

African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat (4th-L) speaks during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (3rd-R) in Beijing, Feb. 8, 2018.

A swift influx of USA assistance, along with that of other donors, is helping improve humanitarian conditions in all of these countries but ultimately it is up to the leaders in these countries, particularly in South Sudan, to stop the violence and put the welfare of their citizens at the forefront of their actions, the US State Department said in a statement seen by APA on Wednesday. "Africa is a growing market with vast potential".

Tillerson said he has made many trips to Africa before, in his former career as an oil executive.

America's top diplomat will have a lot of explaining to do after President Trump used a vulgar term to describe Africa, triggering outrage from the continent. "When do we get to see the outlines of what the Trump Africa policy is?" The Boko Haram recently kidnapped about 110 girls in a secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe state.

USA secretary of State Rex Tillerson has criticized China's model of economic development in Africa, saying it encouraged dependency and denied governments long-term democratic growth. That was in contrast, he added, to USA efforts to bolster democratic institutions, strengthen the rule of law, and improve governance and long-term security goals. "Democracy requires the inclusive, peaceful participation of a nation's citizens in the political process", he said.

He noted that by the year 2030, Africa would represent about one quarter of the world's workforce and by the year 2050, the population of the continent is expected to double to more than 2.5 billion people - with 70 per cent of them under the age of 30.

Earlier this month, on February 17, the USA embassy in Addis Ababa released a statement saying the U.S. "strongly disagrees" with the state of emergency imposed by Ethiopia on February 16.

Making Tillerson's job harder, he's showing up on the continent with few concrete goals or new actions to announce.
