CalVet, a government organization representing California veterans, also confirmed that there was an ongoing situation.

An armed man wearing a bullet proof vest has reportedly taken three people hostage inside a veteran's home in California after firing between 15 and 20 shots, law enforcement officials said.

The man apparently slipped into the sprawling Veterans Home of California during a going-away party.

Thornton says she's still shaking and that she hasn't been able to talk to her father.

Events manager Elizabeth Naylor, who was working about 10 miles north of the veterans' home, said she heard waves of emergency sirens.

Kamer says his wife is now inside the home's dining hall and is not allowed to leave. The home is near several popular Napa Valley wineries and restaurants and borders Vintners Golf Club, where golfers have been evacuated from the course.

According to California Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Home of California in Yountville dates back to 1884 and is considered the largest veterans home in the USA with more than 1000 veterans from all wars dating back to World War II.

There is an active shooter and a hostage situation at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, the California Highway Patrol reports on Twitter. Amanda Vargas, whose husband is the chief of finance in the home's administrative building, said she's been in touch with her husband and he is safe.

The hostages are employees of The Pathway Home, a counseling service for veterans who suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and not residents of the facility north of San Francisco, Napa County Sheriff John Robertson said at a news conference.
