"He initially used pepper spray" against the assailant, Soeros said, before opening fire.

A man was shot dead in Vienna near the Iranian ambassador's residence last night (March 11), after stabbing a guard with a knife. The soldier in response shot the attacker dead, he added.

The residence of the Iranian ambassador in Vienna has not suffered damages in the incident, the spokesman added, but noted that a guard at the building has been wounded and admitted to the hospital.

The soldier has cuts on his right hand, but the protective vest has prevented more serious injuries.

"The background and motive of the attack are still completely unclear and the subject of intensive investigation", according to police spokesperson Harald Sörös.

"The assailant is about 26 years old and apparently possesses Austrian nationality, and there's no information on his identity and motivation for the act", Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday.

Authorities have ordered reinforcements around all diplomatic missions in the city.

A 23-year-old Afghan national confessed to those assaults but denied any political motive.
