It had 71 million subscribers as of the end of previous year, about double its closest competitor, Apple Music. Cue was speaking at the South by Southwest Conference, also known as SXSW, in Austin, Texas.

Spotify launched in South Africa on Monday afternoon - bringing its 35-million-song music catalogue to local users at last.

The company said the music service is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Microsoft Store. South African users have instant access to a wide range of local playlists curated and regularly updated by our team of music experts, including Hip Hop Juice, Top Hits South Africa, House Nation, iGqom Le and SA Gold, alongside millions of Spotify and fan-built worldwide playlists. Apple and Google charge $9.99 per month for their respective services, while Amazon offers theirs for $7.99 to Prime members.

The service is available in two packages: one that holds no subscription fee, but users will have to bear with adverts, which Boller said equates to three minutes of ads per hour of streaming. Just a few months since then, Apple Music is now reporting a total of 38 million paying subscribers, and 8 million trial users. Google does not release paid subscriber numbers for its service, Google Play Music. Texture allows readers to pore over articles in more than 200 magazines for $10 per month, much like Netflix sells unlimited access to its video programming.

Cue has stated that "the opportunity here is about growth for us and growth for everyone." recognizing how the great disparity between those who can afford monthly memberships for streaming services, and those who can't needs to be mended. Apple also sells additional storage in its iCloud service to customers who exceed the free limit of five gigabytes.
