Investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election over

House Intel Committee ending Russia interviews

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee said Monday their investigation found that Russian Federation had interfered with the election, but there was no evidence of collusion with Donald Trump's campaign.

Mr Conaway said the worst the panel had found was "perhaps some bad judgment, inappropriate meetings, inappropriate judgment at taking meetings".

"The House Majority has announced it is terminating the Russia investigation, leaving to others the important work of determining the full extent of Russian interference in our election, the role of US persons connected to the Trump campaign in that intervention, possible efforts to obstruct the investigation by the president, and most important, what needs to be done to protect the country going forward", said Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat. "We don't have any evidence that the Clinton campaign itself or the DNC knew what was going on".

"I believe there's evidence of everything that you just said", the congressman replied.

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, said the exhaustive probe ultimately found no definitive proof that the Trump campaign actively cooperated with any Russians to influence the vote.

Conaway said he hoped to work expeditiously with American intelligence agencies to declassify the report and make it public.

"The majority has placed the interests of protecting the president over protecting the country, and history will judge its actions harshly", said Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif., ranking Democrat on the committee. He has already indicted several former top Trump aides, as he develops evidence of extensive contacts between the campaign and Russian Federation.

Further, even though there was no collusion found, Nunes said his committee has been investigating Russian influence for some time, but as far as collusion, "if we find something new we'll open it back up".

GOP lawmakers plan to give a report and Democrats are likely issue their own briefing about the findings. That certainly seems to be the American electorate's position: The 2016 election turned out the way it did not because American voters loved Trump so much but because they weren't insane about Clinton. "Hopefully, bipartisan effort in Senate Intel Committee will endure". "That's what American leaders have always done, collaboratively as Republicans and Democrats, after every major attack upon our nation".

Soon after the Republican announcement on Monday evening, Trump quickly celebrated on Twitter, reports Politico news.

Mr Nunes, a close supporter of the president, sought with some success to turn it into an investigation of the Obama administration and the FBI, which he and Mr Trump accused of illegally spying on the Republican's campaign.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes has come under fire for how the panel handled the Russian Federation probe.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly investigating whether the meeting was held to create a back channel between Russian Federation and the Trump administration, according to the Post article.

The potential firing, which would've happened last summer, was reportedly called off after White House lawyer Donald McGahn threatened to quit.

"These are the Republicans that control that committee... the finding is hardly surprising", Karl said on ABC's newscast.

Democrats later released their own 10-page memo rebutting the Republican allegations, saying the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department handled the warrant appropriately and the surveillance court was told there was political motivation behind the opposition research.

The intelligence committees both in US Senate and the US House of Representatives were looking into an alleged collusion between Trump's campaign and Moscow, which appears to be corroborated by the unverified dossier.
