Lamb: Pennsylvania race isn't about Trump

Saccone says Trump "needs a good wingman".

President Donald Trump dominated the district in 2016 and has offered his backing to Saccone. And a Monmouth University poll released Monday showed Lamb ahead of Saccone by 6 points, 51 percent to 45 percent.

Conor Lamb, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, speaks during a campaign rally with members of the United Mine Workers of America at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.

So, Clinton describes Trump voters as backward, bigoted, racist and misogynistic and the 52 percent of the white female voters who supported him as timid housewives cowed by the men in their lives.

But unions have lined up behind Lamb and hammered Saccone as a union foe during his tenure as a state lawmaker.

Whether organized labor and other backers of Democrat Conor Lamb can turn out votes for their man Tuesday, or whether the Republican organization can turn out the same voters who gave President Donald Trump a resounding sweep of Pennsylvania's 18th District for GOP hopeful Rick Saccone - that is what will determine who wins the special election Tuesday night.

"Yes, the phone calls and the mailings and the people coming to my house and the radio", he said.

Saccone spoke to reporters shortly before casting his ballot Tuesday near his home in rural Allegheny County south of Pittsburgh.

Cillizza: Did Republicans make a mistake in picking Saccone, an older longtime state legislator? That has required outside groups and the national party to come into the district, which should be a safe one, to try to rescue Saccone.

A Lamb upset would boost Democrats ahead of the November midterm elections. Even with, say, a three-seat majority, the Republicans would select all the committee chairmen and thwart any investigation into the misdeeds of the Trump administration. But almost as much of the district is suburban and includes some of the swing voters that Republicans will have to convince if they are going to hold on to the U.S. House nationally. Internal Republican polling also found Saccone trailing narrowly, though picking up a little ground since the president's Saturday visit to the district.

The areas outside Pittsburgh have trended away from conservative Democratic representation in Congress and the state Legislature to Republican over the last two decades in districts drawn by Republicans. Jobs and wages up.

Burch reports that "Democratic canvassers are now going door-to-door telling voters to "vote for the Catholic" in the race".

"We worked really hard for it and I think it paid off", he said.

Voters in Western Pennsylvania head to the polls Tuesday to pick a new congressman. The neck-and-neck race between Democrat Conor Lamb and Republican Rick Saccone to replace a GOP congressman who resigned amid a sex scandal isn't a flawless test case for November, for a few reasons. He resigned last fall. They had anxious that Rep. Karen Handel, R-Ga., was on track to lose a special 2017 election in suburban Atlanta; her four-point victory went on to boost morale so much that she would hold pep talks for Republican candidates.

Trump has put his full force behind Saccone.

Abortion: Lamb personally opposes abortion but backs the Supreme Court's decision legalizing it.

But the region has doesn't have as many steelworkers as it did in the industry's heydays, even if there's still a cultural association.

One potential explanation for the lack of enthusiasm could be Lamb's outspoken criticism of Democrats' congressional leadership, specifically his non-endorsement of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

THE DISTRICT WILL LIKELY DISAPPEAR: If you thought $12 million being spent by outside groups on one special election race that won't immediately change the power dynamics on Capitol Hill was insane, consider this: The district will likely disappear in November.
