Tiger claws back into contention for first win since 2013

"I kept patient and then I got on a strong and made three [birdies] in a row coming home".

They each went bogey-bogey on the first two holes, though Gooch did somewhat redeem himself with a gain at the par-five fourth.

The four-time major victor chipped in for a birdie at the par-4 15th hole to extend his cushion to two shots atop the leaderboard at the famed Bay Hill course.

"I had to flush it in order to get it there", Woods said.

"That just took time and patience and I'm scoring now - I know where to miss it, I don't really have to think that much and I'm going out there and doing it". And then his round almost got away from him on the par-5 16th when he chunked a shot from the fairway bunker, pitched some 70 feet beyond the hole and had to make an 8-footer for par. It's a golf course that of course I've played well before, and I just felt a little more in control of my game and in control of my swing.

Currently, Woods is rated at just 7/4 - compared with 8/1 at the start of the year - to win a major in 2018 and 25/1 to be named World Number One. "I don't like making bogeys, I don't like dropping shots, because then I have to get it back". Stenson goes into the final round with a one-shot lead for the second time in four years at Bay Hill, where he has never won. "I didn't drop a shot, where I could have easily dropped three shots on those holes". Bryson DeChambeau was in second and Rory McIlroy third (10-under).

"Over the weekend a year ago I was hitting driver pretty much everywhere, leaving myself wedges in". He got aggressive early and even tried to house a driver to reach the green at the par-4 5th hole.

"It's really different", McIlroy said of the sounds that reverberate around a course when Woods is playing.

Stenson is renowned for his ball striking, and 12 birdies over 36 holes would suggest he's dialed in this week. He atoned for that with a 70-foot birdie putt. "I got it up-and-down when I needed to, I took advantage of some of the good shots I hit", said McIlroy, who ranks second in the field in strokes gained/putting, a stat he ranked 124th in entering the week.

"Today was a bad day", he said afterward. He also made a few mistakes that slowed his momentum and caught some tough lies in the bunkers, but still managed to have his ninth straight round at par or better.

The 2016 Open Championship victor, Stenson is among eight major winners in the top 20 - headlined by Tiger Woods - and had a chance to win at Bay Hill in both 2015 and 2016. We want to show him, hey, this is kind of what you did for all of us.
