A former Playboy model who claimed she had an affair with President Donald Trump is seeking to invalidate an agreement that prohibited her from discussing the relationship.

"The lawsuit filed today aims to restore [McDougal's] right to her own voice", McDougal's new lawyer, Peter K. Stris, said in a statement to the New York Times. "The lawsuit is alleging that Miss McDougal's prior lawyer was not acting in her best interest and conspired or colluded with the Trump team, so to speak", ABC News legal analyst Dana Cole said.

In the lawsuit, McDougal contended she and Trump engaged in a 10-month extramarital "romantic relationship" in 2006 and 2007, a time period that overlaps with his alleged affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

McDougal gave her story to the National Enquirer in exchange for the money, but the publication engaged in what is known as a "catch and kill", in which the tabloid never actually runs the story. The company later amended her contract to let her respond to "legitimate press inquiries" about Trump. McDougal is asking the court to nullify the deal with AMI, but on Tuesday afternoon, AMI issued a statement that said McDougal has been free to talk about her relationship with Trump since 2016.

On Tuesday, Karen McDougal (above) filed a lawsuit against American Media Inc.

Daniels received US$130,000 under that agreement.

A White House representative was not immediately available for comment on the ruling.

Davidson told McDougal that the National Enquirer would purchase her story but would not print it because of the friendship between Trump and AMI chief executive David J. Pecker, according to the Daily News. McDougal now claims that AMI is contacting her, citing breach of contract and damages, if any more information is released.

McDougal's lawyers also said Davidson pressured her into signing the contract with AMI. It then goes on to read: "When Mr. Trump became the presidential nominee a decade later, he and his allies did not want the news of the relationship to undermine his campaign".

As American Media and Davidson pushed her to sign the deal August 5, McDougal expressed misgivings.

But when she began talking to ABC News, AMI returned to her with the $150,000 payment for the objective of buying her story, "but it would not publish the story" because of Pecker's relationship with Trump, according to the lawsuit.

American Media has since published McDougal's picture on one cover and featured her in about two dozen columns, the Times reported.

McDougal claims to have flown from Arizona to LA where she was interviewed for hours by AMI CEO Dylan Howard about the alleged affair. McDougal's lawyers said Tuesday that her story further exposes a complex machine created to bury negative stories about the president.
