Trump congratulates Putin on winning presidential election

President Donald Trump said he expects to meet soon with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after calling on Tuesday to congratulate him on his re-election.

"I had a call with President Putin and congratulated him on the victory, his electoral victory", The Guardian quoted President Trump as saying.

Sitting in the Oval Office, he said: "I suspect we'll probably be meeting in the not too distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control, but we will never allow anybody to have anything even close to what we have".

Sanders also said Trump did not broach the topic of Russia's meddling in the US 2016 elections.

Trump's comments drew significant criticism among U.S. politicians, including by Arizona GOP Sen.

During Tuesday's White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked if the topic of Saudi Arabia's human rights violations came up during Trump's meeting with the crown prince.

But any meeting between the two leaders would be controversial, given the ongoing investigations into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 elections.

Ties between Russian Federation and the United States have been severely strained by disagreements over issues including Russia's aggression in Ukraine, its role in the war in Syria, and its alleged interference in Western politics and elections. "John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, blasted Mr. Trump's decision to congratulate Putin on his "'election'" victory. A Kremlin statement said the two leaders also discussed Syria and Ukraine.

"The call had to do also with the fact that we will probably get together in the not-too-distant future so we can discuss arms, we can discuss the arms race", Trump said, though the White House later clarified that there was no specific plans for a summit meeting as of now.

But the two leaders did not discuss Russia's interference in the 2016 United States election or the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, the former double agent targeted with a nerve agent in the UK.

With U.S. -Russian relations at a long-time low, Peskov said, "Putin remains open for normalizing relations with our American partners where it is in our interests".

"On the whole, the conversation was constructive and business-like", it said, adding its goal was to help the two countries "overcome the problems that had accumulated in the Russian-US relations". Russian Federation has denied the accusation. They met on the sidelines of an worldwide summit in Germany last summer and again more informally at another gathering of world leaders in Vietnam in November. In 2000, Putin was thrust into the presidency for the first time and was later re-relected.

"It's blatantly obvious that he has just an inexplicable level of support for President Putin", said Julie Smith, a European security expert who served as deputy national security adviser for former vice president Joe Biden.
