The development comes during a thaw in the North Korean nuclear crisis.

Yun Sang, a popular singer and composer who has been tapped as the music director for Seoul's art troupe, is South Korea's chief delegate for Tuesday's talks. While the official repertoire is yet to be confirmed, the unification ministry says Seoul and Pyongyang will continue discussions via the communications channel at the truce village of Panmunjeom, for further preparatory arrangements. The recent Winter Olympics helped to soothe tensions between South Korea and North Korea, and now, there's another big ice-breaker.

The South Koreans, numbering about 160, will visit North Korea until April 3, the South's Ministry of Unification said in a statement, for the first such performances in more than a decade.

Yoon Sang, the singer and record producer who led South Korea's delegation at the talks, said, "While we're on the stage, I believe it will be hard to portray personal feelings towards denuclearisation".

Hyon Song-wol, head of the all-female Moranbong Band, represents the North's delegation.

Red Velvet is the first girl group to perform in North Korea since Baby VOX in 2003. The singer and producer Yoon Sang will direct the big event. Apparently they were also unable to agree on which songs the South Korean singers will sing, but they are optimistic an agreement can be reached.

It marks the first time that a South Korean entertainer will represent the South's delegation for inter-Korean talks. In the 2000s, various Korean pop singers, including Cho Yong-pil, regarded as a contemporary Korean pop legend, and idol groups, performed in the North's capital.
