The behaviour of some England fans has been described as "appalling" by British police chiefs after 90 were arrested before and after the friendly worldwide against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Friday.

Amsterdam Police said 102 people were arrested on Friday, including "100 Englishmen" and two Dutch fans.

Video footage on social media showed some fans throwing bottles at police and bicycles into Amsterdam's historic canals before the match in the Amsterdam Arena.

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard scored England's goal.

"Without knowing the details... obviously it's not something I want to hear because most of all for us I think our players have represented their country really well tonight with pride and with some style".

"Anything else that takes away from that performance for them would be a great shame".

Officers declared that Riot police have arrested 60 people in the red light region. "The last 8 are still being questioned, mainly for violence against police officers", the Amsterdam police said in a tweet.

The trouble in Amsterdam comes a year after unsavoury scenes marred England's friendly against Germany in Dortmund.

"England fans have worked hard over the last decade or so to improve their reputation and disorder has become a rarity", he explained.

A total of 27 members were suspended for their behaviour in Dortmund.

As relations between the two countries break down over the attempted murder of former Soviet-turned-British spy Sergei Skripal, the United Kingdom government has urged England supporters to think twice about heading to Russia for fear of Russian ultras violently attacking them.

Josh Mahoney, 23, is in Amsterdam with family for his first England game and told the Press Association following the news of Thursday's arrests that the police were "very heavy-handed".

"They attacked us for no reason".
