New post-Brexit passports to be made in France, current manufacturer says

European Union Flag and United Kingdom Flag Intertwined

The British company that makes United Kingdom passports had its hopes dashed today as the government confirmed it has chosen a foreign rival to produce the documents after Brexit.

British passports, which have been produced for years in the burgundy colors of the European Union, are now made by De La Rue.

De La Rue, whose profits fell sharply on Tuesday, was not happy either.

It is understood that Gemalto undercut the British company by £50 million.

Mr Sutherland told Sky News: "I'm going to have to go and face those workers, look at them in the whites of the eyes and try and explain to them why the British Government thinks it's a sensible decision to buy French passports not British passports".

"We've had that confirmed to us by the Home Office", he told BBC radio in reference to Britain's interior ministry, though the government said the process had not concluded.

The Best for Britain campaign group, which wants to keep the door to European Union membership open, hit out at Brexit supporters unhappy at passports being produced by a foreign company.

The head of pro-Europe campaign group Best For Britain, Eloise Todd, said: "The new the pro-Brexit blue passports were supposed to be a statement of intent and now we find out they are to be made by the French or the Dutch".

"I don't disagree with [negotiators] trying to sort out all the issues that the European Union think are relevant but it would be quite nice if we sorted out some of the issues that we thought were relevant at the same time". "The return of our iconic blue passport will re-establish the British identity", she said.

The news, not surprisingly, hasn't gone down too well amongst those in the pro-Brexit camp, with former Cabinet minister and prominent Brexit campaigner Priti Patel going as far as to describe it as "a national humiliation".

Culture Secretary Matt Hancock said the procurement process had not been finalised.

Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said it was "odd to have a national symbol produced abroad" while Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman, Tom Brake, said: "The blue passport saga is turning into a farce".

The chosen company demonstrated that they will be best able to meet the needs of our passport service with a high quality and secure product at the best value for money for our customers and the taxpayer. "A proportion of blank passport books are now manufactured overseas, and there are no security or operational reasons why this would not continue".
