At least Stormy Daniels is no hypocrite

Stormy Daniels provided little new evidence of her alleged 2006 affair with Trump but said she faced intimidation tactics aimed at ensuring her silence in 2011

The White House is in the eye of the storm as it anxiously awaits a potentially explosive 60 Minutes interview featuring President Donald Trump's alleged mistress.

After the Wall Street Journal broke the news in January of the payment to Daniels, In Touch magazine published the interview, which contained salacious details of the alleged tryst between the porn actress and Trump, who met in 2006 at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, said she was tempted to accept "large amounts" of money for her story in the final weeks of the presidential campaign, as the Trump team faced a barrage of allegations about the then-New York businessman's treatment of women.

Daniels told The Washington Post her work in adult entertainment had allowed her to develop a "thick skin", but "nothing could truly prepare someone for this".

The interview airs shortly after former Playboy centerfold model Karen McDougal also accused Trump of an extramarital affair and filed a lawsuit to get out of a confidentiality agreement. ABC News reported last week that Clifford's lawyer claimed she was threatened with "physical harm" to keep the alleged affair a secret.

Daniels' interview with Anderson Cooper certainly won't put an end to this story, but it will be interesting to hear her side of the story.

In the court filing, Clifford alleges their affair was more than a decade ago, and says Trump's lawyer paid her $130,000 to stay silent just before the 2016 election. The payment has become the subject of complaints to the Justice Department and the Federal Election Commission.

While her newfound status as a household name has improved her marketability, increasing her fees for strip club appearances, speaking out carries real financial risks for Ms Daniels. The government watchdog group Common Cause argues that the payment was meant to influence the 2016 election by silencing Ms Daniels and therefore was an illegal in-kind contribution to Mr Trump's campaign. But she said she also has been overwhelmed by an outpouring of support. "I simply wanted to tell my personal truth and defend myself".

Those who have been following this story have likely noticed it has turned into a he-said-she-said matter.

That big interview with Daniels, again, is on 60 Minutes tonight...
