Police Officers Who Fatally Shot Alton Sterling Won't Be Charged

AG Jeff Landry Cannot proceed with prosecution of Officer Lake and Officer Salamoni

When one of the officers yelled that he had a gun, another shot him six times.

"The Louisiana Department of Justice can not proceed with a prosecution of either Officer Lake or either Officer Salamoni", Landry said. Salamoni's lawyer, John McLindon, said he anticipated the department will fire both officers for a violation of policies as a result of the shooting, but that both officers are planning to appeal such firing.

His death prompted national protests and outrage.

Officer Blane Salamoni shot Sterling during a struggle outside a convenience store July 5, 2016.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said on Tuesday that following an investigation the state could not proceed with a prosecution of police officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake.

Sterling's five children also filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the officers previous year. "We came to this conclusion after countless hours of reviewing the evidence", Landry said.

The officers encountered Sterling after responding to a report of a man with a gun outside the Triple S Food Mart.

Salamoni fatally shot Sterling during an ensuing scuffle. Critics expressed frustration at another police-involved shooting in which a Black man was executed without so much as a trial, calling it just another example of rampant police brutality in the United States.

Veda Washington-Abusaleh, Sterling's aunt, was in tears after meeting with Landry.

Landry said drugs were found in Sterling's system and that could have contributed to Sterling's "noncompliance" with commands from officers.

Attorneys for Sterling's relatives have said federal authorities told them Salamoni pointed a gun at Sterling's head and threatened to kill him before the struggle began.

Civil rights activists have blamed the officers for escalating tensions during the arrest in a convenience store parking lot and turning it into a deadly encounter.

State investigators looked into the case after the U.S. Justice Department announced a year ago there wasn't enough evidence to warrant civil rights charges against the two officers.

Landry launched a state probe following the DOJ's ruling in May 2017 and later took over the investigation after the prosecutor for East Baton Rouge recused himself for a prior relationship he had with Salamoni's parents. Long killed three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers and wounded three others before being shot dead. This was a family man.

"It hurts, though, to see them get away and go on with their lives", Dunn said. He then shot him three more times as Sterling sat up on his back.

I support Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and Chief Murphy Paul's decision to conduct an administrative review to determine if any disciplinary action should be taken within the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Attorney General Jeff Landry's spokeswoman declined comment. When he did not, a struggle ensued with Salamoni pulling out his gun and pointing it at Sterling's head and later Lake attempting to shoot Sterling with a Taser.
