Colorado Rockies: Greg Holland finally has a contract

MLB free agent rumors Greg Holland Cardinals finalizing deal

After plenty of Major League Baseball rumors surrounding free agent pitcher Greg Holland signing with a new team, it appears one has actually materialized as legitimate.

Less than two hours before the start of their season, the Cardinals found a closer.

According to the report, Holland will sign a one-year contract worth $14 million.

The Mets had initial internal discussions about signing the 32-year-old, who recorded 41 saves for the Rockies last season, but they were never close to making a deal. And while he can earn up to $14 million this season, the incentives only kick in for awards.

Holland's free agency stretched until late March despite players without almost his pedigree having fetched $9 million a season.

The last remaining unsigned big name free agent appears to have a new team, and he only had to wait until Opening Day. Injuries prevented him from pitching that October and he spent all of 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Before joining the Rockies, Holland was one of the best closers in the game with the Kansas City Royals. Before the MLB All-Star break, he provided 28 saves out of 29 attempts and also achieved an impressive 1.62 ERA in those appearances.

The New York Mets are set to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field.

The Mets have tabbed righty Jacob deGrom as their starter. deGrom recorded 239 strikeouts over 201 innings previous year (with only 59 walks), while finishing the season 15-10 overall with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Cardinals fans also saw the debut of rookie pitcher Jordan Hicks who showed what he's capable of with a 101.6 miles per hour pitch.
