Tesla: Self-driving vehicle a factor in deadly California crash

There was a major announcement from Tesla Friday evening about last week's crash in Mountain View that killed an engineer from Apple.

New York Times reported that the crash renews questions about Autopilot, and whether the company has gone far enough to ensure that it keeps drivers and passengers safe.

The vehicle also caught fire, though Tesla said no one was in the vehicle when that happened.

In the wake of that crash, Tesla has said Autopilot stopped allowing drivers to ignore repeated warnings to keep their hands on the wheel.

Tesla said the driver had "about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view" of the lane divider before the fatal crash.

Tesla has introduced driver-assistance features through Autopilot that the company continuously improves via over-the-air software updates.

They shared that Huang's vehicle would veer toward the same barrier that he fatally hit on Friday, KGO.

At least three people have now died while driving with Autopilot engaged.

Tesla said in its statement that the failure to fix the highway safety barrier exacerbated the crash. Google Maps showed the barrier in a more upright position.

But this is not the first time a crash apparently resulted when a driver did not heed those warnings.

Tesla's semi-autonomous autopilot technology has been a factor in crashes before.

And a recall for 123,000 luxury Model S sedans was issued Thursday due to an issue that can make the cars hard to steer at low speeds.

Price told the I-Team: "I mean, you have to think like a computer, right? And not give any credence to the signals that they provide", said Koppikar. They are also planning services for Huang. The firm also provides vehicle inspection and other related services; non-vehicle testing, inspection, and consultancy services; automotive engineering services; coach services; private hire services; crash fix services; bus station services; and charter, coach, and terminal services. There will be much more debate ahead.

The move came in the wake of a crash in Florida in which an OH man died when his Model S sedan hit a tractor-trailer while Autopilot was engaged. "Our hearts are with the family and friends who have been affected by this tragedy", the company said. "But the vehicle logs show that no action was taken".

In the moments before the collision, which occurred at 9:27 a.m. on Friday, March 23rd, Autopilot was engaged with the adaptive cruise control follow-distance set to minimum.

The driver is expected to remain alert and ready to take over if something comes up that the vehicle can not handle. The highway crash attenuator, a safety barrier that is supposed to absorb much of the force of a high-speed crash, that Huang's SUV smacked into had been crushed in a previous wreck and could not disperse the force of the Tesla's collision.

"In the USA, there is one automotive fatality every 86 million miles across all vehicles from all manufacturers", Tesla wrote.

The nonprofit group Consumer Watchdog has argued that autonomous vehicles are not ready for roads and the public should not be put at risk to test such technology. The fatal accident is said to be the first involving a self-driving auto and a pedestrian.

Tesla Inc. defended its Autopilot feature, saying that while it doesn't prevent all accidents, it makes them less likely to occur than vehicles without it. "It unequivocally makes the world safer for the vehicle occupants, pedestrians and cyclists", the automaker said.
