Chemical weapons watchdog to meet on poisoned ex-spy case

His comments come a day before an extraordinary meeting - called by Russian Federation - with the world's chemical weapons watchdog, the executive council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Sergei Skripal - who settled in Britain after a 2010 spy swap - remains critically ill in hospital.

GETTY•RTFormer Russian general warned the aftermath of the Salisbury attack could lead to a warWhen pressed by host Nick Robinson over what he meant by "worse than a cold war", the ex-Russian Lieutenant-general warned the crisis could develop into a "real war".

So far 29 nations have expelled diplomats over the poisoning, which the British government holds Russian Federation responsible for. The Trump administration expelled 60 Russians from the USA alone.

In response Russian Federation expelled 23 British diplomats, closed a British consulate in Saint Petersburg and halted the activities of the British Council educational and cultural organisation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday suggesting that the British government may be behind the poisoning to distract attention from problems around Brexit.

The tensions also are an outgrowth of USA sanctions on Russian Federation for meddling in the 2016 US elections.

Former double agent Skripal, who has lived in Britain since a spy swap in 2010, and his daughter have been in hospital since March 4 after the poisoning that London and its major Western allies have blamed on Russian Federation. British intelligence agencies could have been involved and the case helped distract public attention from the British government's hard talks to exit the European Union, Lavrov said.

"There are other explanations besides those put forward by our Western colleagues, who declare that it can only be the Russians who are responsible". "It could also be advantageous to the British government, who clearly find themselves in a hard situation having failed to fulfill their promises to voters over Brexit".

Late last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again demanded the United Kingdom give Russian diplomats access to Yulia, who is a Russian citizen.

British officials have previously rejected similar Russian allegations.

It said the meeting behind closed doors will start at 10am (0800 GMT) at the OPCW's headquarters in The Hague. His daughter Yulia has been taken off the critical list.

Filatov says Russian Federation wants Britain to "provide every possible element of evidence" it holds about the March 4 attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury.

The US ambassador was also ordered to shut the consulate in St Petersburg, in Russia's retaliation for the biggest expulsion of diplomats since the Cold War. "Now, Britain, the U.S. and a few countries blindly following them have dropped all decorum and engaged in blatant lies and disinformation".
