Patriots' Julian Edelman May Have Thwarted a School Shooting

The New England Patriots' slot receiver recently helped notify authorities about a comment on one of his Instagram posts, under which a 14-year-old boy said he was going to shoot up his school, according to a story from Ken Belson of the New York Times. "There is a kid in your comment section says he [is] going to shoot up a school, I think you should alert the authority".

"I'm going to shoot my school up watch the news."

Edelman, who was in Texas at the time, immediately alerted his assistant Shannen Moen in Boston, asking her to look through the hundreds of comments left on his most recent post. Officers in MI contacted the boy, who then admitted posting the threat. Officers also reportedly found two rifles that belonged to the boy's mother inside the home.

The incident occured roughly five weeks after 17 people lost their lives in the Parkland, Fla., school shooting.

Instead of just brushing the message off, Edelman took it upon himself to contact his assistant Shannen Moen about the unsafe threat. "Our on-duty supervisors immediately started looking into the information that was provided", said Capt. Joe Platzer of the Port Huron Police Department in MI. The teenager was taken to a juvenile detention center and charged with making a false report of a threat of terrorism, which could keep him detained for four years.

Edelman said the "real hero" was the Instagram user who initially flagged the comment.

"Any time someone makes a threat to shoot up a school or building", Port Huron Police Capt. Joseph Platzer told the Times, "we take it very seriously".
