No considerable damage has been reported after a magnitude 5.3 natural disaster at the Channel Islands location from the Southern California shore, however a few bricks fell from the chimney at a historical ranch on one of the islands.

The tremor occurred just before 12:30 p.m. local time south of Santa Cruz Island and was felt as far away as Los Angeles, according to the USGS.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department's Office of Emergency Services said there have been no reports of damage. The quake centred about 57 km southwest of Channel Islands Beach, California, according to the USGS.

Seismologists at Caltech said the temblor was the strongest quake to hit the area since a magnitude-5.1 shaker in La Habra on March 28, 2014.

Scientists at the California Institute of Technology's seismology laboratory in Pasadena, northeast of Los Angeles, said the quake warning system under development for the West Coast gave about 10 seconds of warning before shaking arrived. Shaking was reported throughout a widespread part of Southern California.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was also assessing the region for damage.

There were no reports of significant damage due to the quake.

Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Steve Swindle told KTLA he was at the agency's headquarters in Camarillo when the natural disaster hit and he felt it.

"It is Southern California, we are quake country".

One woman said the quake's "rolling motion" caused walls to creak and items to swing in Torrance.

"I didn't feel much, but then my co-workers said they felt an natural disaster", she said. "We know that it's coming", Swindle said.
