JUST IN: Ex-president sentenced to 24 years in Jail

As well as giving her a heavy jail sentence, the Seoul central district court fined Park 18 billion won (€13.7 million), convicting her of 16 counts of corruption, including bribery, coercion and abuse of power.

February 13: The court sentences Choi, Park's friend, to 20 years in prison for bribery.

In an unprecedented move, the South Korean authorities permitted live broadcast of Friday's verdict.

Park and her lawyers were not present in the court to hear the verdict.

Park has a small group of fierce supporters - majority middle aged and older - who regularly stage rallies calling for her release and after the verdict was broadcast, thousands of them marched near the Seoul court to protest the ruling.

A South Korean judge said Friday that ex-President Park Geun-hye is guilty of abuse of power and coercion.

Park and Lee are not the only South Korean leaders to have been sent to prison.

Park was dismissed in March a year ago when the Constitutional Court upheld her impeachment. She and Park were accused of extracting bribes or promises of bribes totaling $70 million from conglomerates including Samsung and from big businesses in return for favorable treatment from Park's government.

Moon's office said Park's fate was "heartbreaking" not only for herself but for the country, and added that history that was not remembered would be repeated.

February 27: Prosecutors demand a 30-year prison term for Park, saying she has shown no remorse for "disrupting constitutional order and damaging the public's trust in state power".

Prosecutors are aiming for a 30-year prison term.

Park, 66, was convicted of receiving or demanding more than $20 million from conglomerates, sharing secret state documents, "blacklisting" artists critical of her policies, and firing officials who resisted her abuses of power.

Park, the 11th and the first woman president of South Korea and also East Asia, is the daughter of Park Chung-hee, the third president of the country who ruled between 1963 and 1979.

Park's corruption scandals were nothing short of apocalyptic for South Korea's political culture, looping in the giant electronics corporation Samsung and sending the billionaire heir apparent to the company, Lee Jae-yong, to jail for 12 years in December.

Apparently this was as a result of a scandal that exposed webs of corruption between political leaders and the country bigwigs.

Three months later, the eight-member Constitutional Court voted unanimously to remove her from office.

During her father's 18-year rule, Park Geun-hye served as first lady after her mother was killed in an assassination attempt targeting her father in 1974. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Ten days later, she is arrested.
