85000-year-old fossil finger points to early humans entering Saudi Arabia

The Arabian finger bone is the first and earliest homo sapiens fossil found on the Arabian Peninsula, as well as the oldest specimen of the human species to be discovered outside of Africa and its doorstep, the Levant. Now, they may have it. "They earned this find the old-fashioned way: hard work".

Nevertheless, many archaeologists believe the Levant was a bottleneck and that humans did not travel further until 70,000 years ago.

M - New research suggests that modern humans were living in Saudi Arabia about 85,000 years ago, BBC reported.

Using a technique called uranium series dating, the fossil was found to be up to 90,000 years old.

Thus this discovery strengthens the fact that humans ventured out of Africa more than 60,000 years ago.

He showed the find to a colleague, who suggested it may have belonged to a primate, possibly human.

The finding is the oldest human fossil on record unearthed outside of Africa and the Levant (an area encompassing the Eastern Mediterranean, including Israel), and the oldest human remains uncovered in Saudi Arabia, the researchers said.

"We know that shortly after they lived, the rains failed and the area dried up", said Oxford archaeologist Huw Groucutt.

General view of the excavations at the Al Wusta site, Saudi Arabia. Dozens of sharpened stone tools buried in the sediment hinted that it might be a special place.

Other remains found at the site, like animal bones with cut marks on them and stone tools, are signs the humans relied on the animals for food. "That night back at the hotel, we were Googling 'human finger bone" and, yeah, it looked like our species". He couldn't immediately tell whose this bone was and from where it had come.

With a length of only 3.2 centimeters, the fossil, probably the median bone of a major, was discovered in 2016. Researchers bored a microscopic hole into it with a laser and measured traces of radioactive elements within.

To determine how old the bone was, the team sent it to Rainer Grün, a dating specialist at Griffith University in Australia, who had previously helped date a 180,000-year-old jawbone from an Israeli cave.

The worldwide team published its findings in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.

"The Al Wusta research adds support to the notion that there were numerous, perhaps almost continuous, pulses of Homo sapiens dispersals from Africa, and that regional moist episodes may have triggered the dispersals", says Donald Henry of the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. It is the second bone in from the fingertip, but it's not clear which finger.

"I said: 'What could this be?"

Katerina Harvati, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Tübingen in Germany, agrees, noting there's so much anatomical overlap between hominin species that she'd like to see additional fossils confirm it.

"They're coming up against animals that they've never seen before; environments they've never seen before", he said. They also raise questions about how long these early migrants' descendants lived on.
