But this is not the first time athletes have disappeared during major sporting events, as 25 competitors went missing in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, while 26 disappeared during the 2002 Games in Manchester.

"These athletes left in three waves".

West Midlands Police tell us what they've learnt from their Australian colleagues - ahead of the Games in Birmingham. First in the night of April 8 three athletes departed the village.

Australian Border Force were searching for weightlifters Olivier Matam Matam, Arcangeline Fouodji and Petit David Minkoumba and boxers Ndzie Tchoyi and Simplice Fotsala after they apparently fled. Two of the athletes had not yet competed.

"They are keeping a watching brief on these athletes".

"Until it becomes a real issue in terms of visas and so forth we would obviously need to take that very seriously but right now it's a safety and welfare issue for those athletes from a Team Cameroon perspective".

Gold Coast organizing committee chairman Peter Beattie said he wasn't surprised and it was something that happened at other games. "There is a system to deal with this and it will be dealt with".

Blagg, who won gold with Rebecca Gallantree at the Games four years ago in Glasgow, secured second place with 276.90 points behind of Australia pair Esther Qin and Georgia Sheehan on 284.10 points.

Cameroon officials told 7 News that most of the athletes disappeared in the middle of the night, some even leaving their belongings behind at the athlete's village.

In 2012, seven athletes from Cameroon were reported missing from the London Olympic Games.

Before the Games opened, home affairs minister Peter Dutton warned athletes not to overstay their visas.

The officials say the five boxers and three weightlifters left the Gold Coast village over the past three days but authorities say they have not broken any law.

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg said the missing athletes had not broken any laws at this stage and it was a matter for Cameroon team officials.
