Civilian, Army man killed in ongoing encounter and protests in south Kashmir

Kulgam encounter

Kulgam encounter

On April 2, Indian soldiers killed at least three civilians and wounded 70 more when hundreds of people tried to prevent another security operation.

The officials said a 25-year-old man succumbed to injuries at a hospital. "As room intervention is not possible, so the house may be blasted soon", a police official told ET.

This was strongly contested by locals who assert that the civilians were shot dead by the security forces determined to break up the street protests.

Forces used high grade explosives to blast the house where the militants are trapped, sparking a blaze that has spread to adjoining houses and commercial buildings, witnesses said.

Reports claim the civilian killings were caused after the local populace hindered in the operation of security forces.

Police officials stated this after clearing the debris of the house. "Among the 10 injured, eight with serious wounds were referred to Srinagar hospitals".

Reports from Kulgam said that the security forces also used batons and fired teargas canisters and pellet shotguns to quell the protests during and immediately after the encounter, injuring almost 50 people.

However, some people in Kulgam alleged that the four were killed when security forces opened fire on a crowd that was proceeding towards the encounter site.

There was also no official word on the death of the hiding terrorists. Unrest also gripped Anantnag, Pulwama and Shopian towns.

Students in several colleges and universities carried out protests shouting pro-freedom slogans.

Meanwhile, separatists under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) called for a general strike tomorrow against the "civilian killings".

While Malik addressed the media in person, Geelani and the Mirwaiz spoke to the journalists over telephone.
