Malaysia chef-de-mission at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Huang Ying How said he was not in panic mode over the sub-par achievement by the national contingent so far, which has only managed to pick up two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, and ranked 12th overall.

The five boxers and three weightlifters - representing a third of the Cameroon team - disappeared from the athletes' village at Griffith University, the Cameroon delegation said.

The Cameroonian authorities said before the Games that they are monitoring their athletes to ensure they do not overstay their visas, but the whereabouts of the eight is unknown.

"My advice to the AFN and Sports Ministry is that they should treat those home-based athletes better, before another country does it for us as we have so many talents back home, "he said".

"[We have] no other information, nobody knows where they went".

"We would appreciate them sticking within the law, enjoying themselves, but sticking within the law", organising committee boss Peter Beattie told reporters.

"We need to make sure that we are efficient against the Australians as we might not get too many chances because they are a strong team", said the skipper.

Cowichan Bay triathlete Desirae Ridenour helped Canada to fourth in the mixed team relay on April 7, finishing just seven seconds back of third-place New Zealand.

He also said that all eight athletes prepared in Warwick in central Queensland prior to the Games, but only six of them took part in their respective competitions, while two left without competing.

"However, Commonwealth Games visitors who do not meet their visa requirements can expect to have their visas cancelled".

"I think it's disappointing that athletes that have come didn't compete as they were scheduled to compete", he said.

According to the BBC, press attache, Simon Molombe reported the "desertion" adding that the missing athletes were last seen at different times on Monday and Tuesday.

Although the Australian Border Force has been informed, the athletes are not yet in breach of their visa conditions.

The Indian men's hockey team scored two goals in the final three minutes to overcome England 4-3 in a thrilling match to top Pool B and enter the semi-finals of the 21st Commonwealth Games here April 11.

The Cameroonian athletes are nowhere according to reports meanwhile; they have valid visas until May 15, allowing them to spend another month legally in Australia.
