8-year-old boy attacks classmates with knife at elementary school in Minnesota

School officials sent a note to parents Monday saying they are working to identify and provide support to staff and students affected by the incident, CBS Minnesota reports.

Sauk Rapids Police Chief Perry Beise says it was an eight-year-old boy who had brought a kitchen knife to school.

By the time officers arrived, Beise said, the boy was in an office with a counsellor and the three injured students were being treated by the school nurse. He was interviewed and released to his parents. The suspect student was taken into custody by the Sauk Rapids Police and released to his parents. He says the kid brought the knife with him to the school and became aggressive with it and struck three other students.

This morning we had an unfortunate and scary incident that happened before school started.

The boy allegedly cut three children with the knife in less than a minute.

The attacker will not be allowed back into the school, the paper said. The victims ages are 8, 9 and 13.

The injured students suffered superficial wounds that required stitches, according to KARE in Minnesota. "We're not sure exactly why he came to school with a knife".

The incident took place in the hallway as students were heading to class.

An ambulance was called but was not needed. The chief says he doesn't know if the boy had been bullied or had mental health issues.

According to WCCO, children under the age of 10 can not be criminally charged. Pleasantview has 720 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the school district's website. In December 2012, Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother to death at their Newtown, Connecticut, home before killing 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
