Amazon Discloses Prime Service Has Over 100 Million Subscribers

In his letter he says the number of Prime members is over 100 million. In the letter, Bezos said 2017 marked the first year when more than half of the goods sold on Amazon worldwide were from third-party sellers. As of the end of September, Levin said Prime had an estimated 90 million USA members alone.

Best known as an online retail colossus, Amazon has the leading system for hosting services or content in the internet cloud and is the force behind the Alexa digital assistant being built into a wide array of devices.

As part of his letter, Bezos also said that for the first time in Amazon's history, its third-party marketplace previous year accounted for more than half of its sales.

In after hours trade, Amazon shares were up about 1.5% after Bezos' disclosure.

Brendan Witcher, a principal analyst at Forrester, said the number of subscribers makes clear that Amazon "keeps laying on more and more reasons for consumers to become Prime members". "In the a year ago we made Prime Video even better for customers by adding new, award-winning Prime Originals to the service, like The Marvelous Mrs". He said that, in 2017 alone, Amazon shipped over five billion items all around the world, highlighting that a big part of the service's growth is thanks to its recent expansion to countries like Luxembourg, Mexico, Singapore and the Netherlands.

Bezos also said that Amazon's streaming of National Football League games on Thursday night accumulated more than 18 million viewers over 11 games. "Focusing on Prime membership is an excellent strategy for Amazon".

Amazon will report earning on April 26th.
