Stoke City fans appear to be consigned to their fate after last night's 1-1 draw with West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Crouch's 79th-minute goal had looked like giving the Potters a smash-and-grab victory when Hammers goalkeeper Joe Hart, in front of watching England manager Gareth Southgate, spilled Xherdan Shaqiri's fierce shot.

Andy Carroll came off the bench to secure a point for West Ham United against a plucky Stoke City side.

West Ham are a very hard side to predict, just look at their last two home games for evidence of that; they were abysmal in the 0-3 loss to Burnley, brilliant in the 3-0 win over Southampton. But, look, if you're a goalkeeper it's going to happen. "It is tough at the minute but we'll keep working".

"I'm sure the crowd will be behind us and I'd love the atmosphere to be electric to make it as hard as possible for Stoke and to make it as easy as possible for us".

"I think the points we've taken in recent weeks have been really important, winning here against Southampton (3-0) and taking a point at Chelsea (1-1)".

- Peter Crouch is now on 16 sub goals in the Premier League (level with Javier Hernandez); only four players have more (Defoe 24, Giroud 19, Kanu 17 and Solskjaer 17). When I think of that situation I always think to Scott Carson when he got put in at Wembley against Croatia.

"If you get to 40 points, then it'll be close", the Scot said.

"The ball came in and it was right on the path of my left foot so I just whacked it!"

Just as Lambert gambled to bring on Crouch, Hammers boss David Moyes did the same when he introduced the England striker, who had not played since January because of an ankle injury, in the 86th minute.

The tense nature of the contest had certainly got through to the home crowd, whose seemed anxious and agitated as their charges struggled to find a way through. As it turned out, Stoke has five points to make up in its final four games if the team is to preserve its top-flight status.

Moyes was disappointed to see three efforts ruled out for offside but felt the third one surrounding Carroll, when he handled inside the area, could have gone in his side's favour.

Diouf nearly scored at the other end a minute later, but he lifted Bauer's cross from right over the crossbar from six yards out.
