911 operator who hung up on emergency calls is sentenced to jail

Creshanda Williams, 44, was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months probation after a jury found her guilty of hanging up on Texas residents attempting to call 911. She worked at the Houston Emergency Center for about a year and a half until she was sacked over allegations that she was systemically shutting down calls, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Her supervisor noticed an "abnormally large number of "short calls" coming from Williams.

Williams reportedly told investigators she often hung up because she didn't want to talk to anyone at those times. She was sentenced last week to 10 days in prison and 18 months of probation.

"The citizens of Harris County rely on 911 operators to dispatch help in their time of need", said Lauren Reeder, a Harris County prosecutor.

Investigators said she once hung up on a man whose wife collapsed and lost consciousness.

When Williams was arrested in October 2016, KPRC TV recounted several of the calls that she was accused of cutting short.

Court documents also highlighted one incident in 2016 with a caller named Jim Moten. The man called a second time and got a different operator, but by time police arrived, the store manager had been shot and killed.

A Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesperson declared that public servants like Williams should be criminally liable if they deliberately tamper with emergency services.

In one instance, Williams hung up on an officer and said afterward, "Ain't nobody got time for this".

Williams had hung up on various calls, including robberies, homicides, and reports of speeding vehicles.

At the time, the HEC said the high volume of short calls from Williams were an "anomaly" rather than an issue with the center, reports the Houston Chronicle.

Williams' defense attorney, Franklin Bynum, says they plan to appeal. "But punishing her doesn't do anything to fix the problems that still exist at the emergency center".
