McCabe 'upset and disappointed' over Comey comments

Fired FBI deputy director facing criminal referral

"In this case I think they have got it horribly wrong", he said of the inspector general's report on McCabe.

The inspector general's office has referred the matter to the U.S. Attorney's office for consideration of an investigation.

Despite the OIG's judgment call that McCabe did not apprise Comey of the leak, it is highly unlikely that he would not have cleared his actions with the Director given that they pertained to a story regarding the FBI's investigation of the Clinton Foundation in the middle of the election.

His dismissal drew scrutiny in part because Mr. McCabe was a frequent target of Mr. Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill. That investigation had to be one of the biggest matters on Comey's agenda. Bromwich said there exist two emails between McCabe and Comey that support McCabe's version, though he acknowledged the emails were sent on October 21 and 23, and were in reference to a different Wall Street Journal story about political donations McCabe's wife had received from Terry McAuliffe, a Clinton ally.

Spokesmen for the Justice Department and its inspector general's office declined to comment to Reuters, as did a spokeswoman for McCabe. Could the investigation come down to various FBI officials turning on each other to avoid prison time? This is a legal situation about the fact that according to the inspector general, Andrew McCabe lied under oath to FBI investigates and inspector general investigators, which is a felony. It would make one hell of an epilogue to both of their books, and they'll have plenty of time to peck out corrections in the clink. Asked about the referral during an appearance Thursday on CNN, Comey said he "could well be a witness" against McCabe and that he felt "conflicted" about the matter.

When President Trump unceremoniously fired Comey from the bureau, McCabe declared at a congressional hearing days later that it had been "the greatest privilege and honor in my professional life to work" under Comey's leadership, and challenged the White House's assertion that Comey had lost the faith of the bureau's rank and file. Bromwich said there is telephonic and email evidence that McCabe told Comey about the contact with the WSJ, but DOJ is not allowing him to share the emails.

The Justice Department's inspector general concluded that McCabe misled officials under oath about authorizing the disclosure. He told them he had not authorized the disclosure to the Wall Street Journal and did not know who did, the report said. McCabe has claimed that the IG investigation and other legal actions taken against him are aimed at discrediting him as a potential witness in the Russian Federation investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

How does that go with Jim Jordan said in that soundbite I played earlier where most people say, wait a second, what happened to Mike Flynn?

"I like him very much as a person, but sometimes even good people do things they shouldn't do", Comey said of McCabe.

IG refers to the inspector general.

Though McCabe and Comey were colleagues, they are not bound to never criticize each other or to display unfailing loyalty.

"All institutions are fallible", Bromwich said.

Jill McCabe got ~$500,000 from a PAC controlled by Clinton crony Terry McAuliffe, who was governor of Virginia at the time, and another ~$200,000 from the state Democratic Party.

CHANG: So how is Andy McCabe preparing to defend himself? The letter cites Attorney General Jeff Sessions as saying that "McCabe lacked candor - including under oath - on multiple occasions".

Michael Bromwich, McCabe's lawyer, said in a statement: "We were advised of the referral within the past few weeks".

He says he's already met with representatives from the U.S. Attorney's office and is confident that, "unless there is inappropriate pressure from high levels of the Administration, the US Attorney's Office will conclude that it should decline to prosecute".
