Mrs Bush's grand-daughters offered readings and eight of her grand-sons were pallbearers.

At Bush's own request, her younger son, former Florida governor and 2016 presidential candidate Jeb Bush delivered a eulogy. "Jeb, I believe in Jesus and he as my savior", she told him. Her not curling her hair. She fulfilled George Bush when they were youngsters and so they were married in January 1945.

The Bush son recalled his mother as a wonderful example, and his parents' marriage as loving and long-lasting. "I don't want to leave your dad, but I know I'll be in a handsome place". The former Secretary of State opted for a black and white tweed jacket for the occasion.

Barbara Bush was the "first lady of the greatest generation".

On Saturday, her family remembered her as a God-fearing, kind and strict woman who devoted her life to others. Known for her wit, Susan Garrett Baker related that Mrs. Among the approximately 1,500 attendees were former Presidents George H.W. Bush, George Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

The former president honored his wife, and her life's commitment to literacy, at the funeral by wearing a pair of socks featuring books. He laughed as Meacham and others recalled his wife's wicked sense of humor.

Former President Barack Obama is expected to attend the funeral along with his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama. Many were seen embracing in the church before the service on a gray, cloudy day as flags were flown at half-mast. The church was adorned with sprays of yellow garden roses, yellow snap dragons, antique hydrangeas and other flowers.

Other guests at the funeral included former Rep. Trump promises to hang it on the wall in the White House.

President Trump did not attend the funeral to "avoid disruptions" of added security.

But the President did tweet a photo of the former First Lady's White House portrait, saying, "today, my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bush family".

A private burial service will take place on the grounds of the presidential library.

As the family entered the church, the second President Bush guided his father's wheelchair to the family's pew.

And she was "a remarkable and selfless companion to her beloved husband George".

At the public viewing Friday night, attendees received a remembrance card with a statement from Bush that read, "George Bush and I have been the two luckiest people in the world, and when all the dust is settled and all the crowds are gone, the things that matter are faith, family and friends".

They stood at attention and saluted as that procession of about 13 vehicles arrived with the former first lady.
