Coordinated Taliban attacks in two cities in Afghanistan have killed at least 16 security officers, authorities said Monday.

United States ambassador John Bass wrote on Twitter: "This senseless violence shows the cowardice and inhumanity of the enemies of democracy and peace in Afghanistan".

The first blast took place around 10a.m. when a suicide bomber blew himself up among a crowd lining up to get access to an election-related registration site in Kabul, killing 52 and injuring 112, Xinhua news agency reported.

Residents inspect the site of a suicide bombing outside the voter registration centre. They were originally scheduled to be held in October 2016, but due to election reforms and security situation the parliamentary elections were postponed to July 2018 and then to October this year.

In January, more than a hundred people were killed when an ambulance auto bomb was detonated outside the country's former interior ministry building in Kabul.

In a statement, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called the attackers "savage terrorists", and vowed they would "never weaken the resolve and will of our people for wider participation in the democratic process".

According to the BBC, this is the fourth attack on a voting center since registration began at the beginning of the month.

Relatives of the victims mourn at a hospital after a suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Sunday.

At least 58 people were killed in twin blasts in Afghanistan on Sunday while another 117 were injured, media reports said. The voter registration process started on April 14. Taliban militants released the five on Thursday. Officials fear the death toll could rise.

Nearly a month ago - during the Persian New Year - an ISIS suicide bomber attacked a Shiite shrine in Kabul, killing 31 and wounding 65.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Some Western and Afghan officials expect 2018 to be a particularly bloody year.

Both ISIS and the more well-established Taliban have stepped up attacks across Afghanistan in recent years.
