Rapper Meek Mill freed from jail

A multitude of celebrities celebrated after Pennsylvania's Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday to have a lower court in Philadelphia immediately release rapper Meek Mill from prison, the New York Daily News reported.

To say that the hip-hop community has rallied around him would be an understatement, from entertainment kingpin Jay-Z, whose Roc Nation company manages Mill, to Canadian superstar Drake, who famously beefed with the Philadelphia rapper in 2015.

"Welcome home Meek Mill", was about all that was heard from the public address announcer as wild cheers drowned out the rest.

Shortly after Meek's release he took a ride with 76ers players and co-owner Michael Rubin to the game against Miami Heat and rang the Liberty Bell before tipoff.

He sent a letter on Mill's behalf to the presiding judge and regularly visited Mill in jail. Rubin received the news at around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, just a couple of hours after visiting Mill with comedian Kevin Hart.

Rubin picked up the 30-year-old rapper from a state prison in the city of Chester Tuesday. "As we have said all along, Meek was unjustly convicted and should not have spent a single day in jail", said Tacopina.

"I need clothes", Mill, wearing jeans and a solid burgundy shirt, said.

A third of Pennsylvania's prison beds in 2017 were occupied by people who have violated parole or probation, costing the state $420 million per year, according to the report.

A spokesman for District Attorney Larry Krasner said late Tuesday that the Supreme Court's decision on Meek Mill's release was consistent with the position taken by their office. "I understand that many people of color across the country don't have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues".

Meek Mill said his immediate plans are to "work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction" and resume his music career.

"For him to come to this type of game. You could tell he was trying to hold on", Embiid said after scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds in Philadelphia's win. "It was big for the city to see him out and to see us clinch a first round".

As we previously reported, on Tuesday, the 30-year-old rapper was released from prison after serving nearly five months behind bars for violating probation.

Mill issued a statement saying the past months had been "a nightmare", and thanked his many supporters and visitors, who included Rubin, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Democratic Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

Members of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles also championed Mill's cause.

But a survey by The Marshall Project, a non-profit news organisation that covers the USA judicial system, found that at least 61,250 people - and probably far more - are in prison across the United States for minor parole violations like missing appointments, failing drug tests or staying out past curfew. "When I was in jail I couldn't give him an answer, I didn't know what to say to him, but now I'm going to be spending all this time with him".
