Trump commemorates 'Meds Yeghern', Armenian deaths of 1915

Ankara offers condolences to families of victims of 1915 events

President Trump's "Turkey First" approach tightens Erdogan's grip over USA policy on the genocide of Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and other Christians.

Armenian national squad captain and Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has commemorated Armenian Genocide, on the 103rd anniversary of this tragedy.

While the number of Armenians who perished during the genocide remains under debate, Armenians say 1.5 million died, while Turkey suggests 300,000 perished.

Sadly, by caving in to Turkish pressure, President Trump is isolating America, which today stands alone as Ankara's last genocide-denial lifeline.

The Hurriyet Daily noted, "In contrast with the stance of Armenia, its diaspora and numerous other countries, Ankara does not recognize the 1915 killings as 'genocide, ' emphasizing that there were casualties 'on both sides'".

The President's full statement is provided at the end of this news item.

Hundreds of residents of the Armenian capital are taking part in Tuesday commemorative events dedicated to the anniversary of the genocide of Armenians, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

The opposition is dominated by younger Armenians. "And it's not fair because we have such a large Armenian community here in America".

The ceremony in question took place on 24 April in Istanbul.

103 years have passed since the start of the Armenian Genocide, the first genocide of the 20th century.

The Turkish government vehemently opposes the use of the word genocide to describe the Armenian deaths, saying instead they occurred in the chaos of World War I. Turkey holds strategic importance to the USA military, which operates out of bases in that nation. The practice of genocide has occurred throughout human history.

Now Armenia is among the forerunners of the struggle against genocides. The U.S. House of Representatives adopted legislation on the Armenian Genocide in 1975, 1984 and 1996.

Over 25 countries have recognized the Armenian Genocide, including a dozen of our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies the European Union, and, of course, Pope Francis.

Armenians and Turks held demonstrations Tuesday in front of the Turkish embassy in the US capital to mark the 103rd anniversary of the events of 1915 during the First World War, Anadolu Agency reports.
