What Jason Witten's possible retirement means for the Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys' Jason Witten reportedly will retire to join ESPN's 'Monday Night Football' booth

Witten said at the end of last season that he meant to continue playing, then reached an agreement in late March to restructure his contract. ESPN declined comment and has had no announcement to reveal its new Monday Night Football broadcast team.

However, he will be meeting with team owner Jerry Jones on Friday "before making his decision final", per Mortensen.

Witten, who turns 36 on May 6, will have played 15 years in the NFL. "We don't think we're going into a season without a good tight end".

Witten was drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft after a college career at Tennessee.

Schultz had 22 catches for 212 yards and a career-high three touchdowns as a senior. The Cowboys signed Romo, an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois, that same year.

After being inactive for all 16 games as a rookie and constantly finding himself in head coach featured Bruce Arians' doghouse, Humphries showed more in his second and third seasons.

But honestly, the Dallas Cowboys will never find a player like Jason Witten. In 2012, he suffered a lacerated spleen in a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders but managed to get cleared medically hours before the regular-season opener against the Giants.

It's not exactly a denial that Jason Witten is indeed retiring but it isn't a rebuttal either.

Brown is entering the final year of his contract and San Francisco drafted McGlinchey ninth overall to take his role.

Even without finality, Jones spent some time talking about the tight ends - Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers - that would be left on the roster without Witten. "We believe he's a natural fit in our defensive system, and his abilities will allow him to flourish". In prior weeks, there has been speculation about ESPN targeting Witten for their opening on Monday Night Football. He and his wife, Michelle, have four young children.

He made 11 Pro Bowls, four All Pro teams, and owns a plethora of National Football League and franchise receiving records.

The Jason Witten SCORE Foundation connects mentors with families suffering from domestic violence or abuse and established a domestic violence prevention program in 2010.
