McNamara died suddenly in 2016 after years spent investigating the unsolved California crimes for a book.

But Oswalt said the fact that, in a press conference announcing the arrest, Californian authorities used the phrase Golden State Killer - coined by McNamara in the book - was proof of the impact of her work.

"I'll be Gone in the Dark" was published on February 27 and became a New York Times bestseller.

California investigators tracked down the man they suspect is the Golden State Killer by comparing crime scene DNA to information on genealogy websites consumers use to trace their ancestry, a prosecutor said on Thursday.

Retired FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said he and others have speculated that the serial killer had police or military training because of the sophistication of the crimes and the suspect's ability to elude capture.

While DNA evidence ultimately provided a key to unlock the case, Jones said, "I can't underscore enough the absolute human factor", citing the dogged work of detectives, district attorneys, the community and the victims. "There were a lot of people who would say, 'yeah if you were home then maybe he wouldn't have even come into the house because there was somebody else home".

Her widower, actor Patton Oswalt, tweeted Wednesday, "If they've really caught the #GoldenStateKiller I hope I get to visit him".

The police said the book did generate renewed interest from the public in the case, but that it didn't directly lead to the arrest. Pictures of DeAngelo today portray a grizzled, bald senior citizen who was a police officer during the time of the attacks and had only a minor criminal record. The suspect, they said, was tied to many of those crimes through DNA.

In March 2017, an Oregon City police officer, working with the California investigators, obtained a court order directing the nursing home resident, a 73-year-old man, to provide a DNA sample. I'll be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer was written by McNamara, who is also credited with popularizing the "Golden State Killer" name in her 2013 article about him in the Los Angeles Times. She said there's a sense of freedom and a big sigh of relief knowing the man suspected of killing her mom is now behind bars.

The "Golden State Killer" has been known by several aliases including the "East Area Rapist" and "The Original Night Stalker". It's likely that one of those scanned documents might just turn up in the courtroom, when the alleged Golden State Killer faces the justice McNamara so desired.

After putting her daughter to bed, and saying goodnight to her husband, McNamara writes she would retreat to her makeshift workspace, boot up her laptop and scour through old year book photos, mug shots, thousands of pages of 1970s-era police files and autopsy reports.

DeAngelo has been charged with eight counts of murder in three counties after being linked to the crimes through DNA.

"She would have wanted zero credit for it", said Stratton.

Authorities were seeking weapons and other items that could link the suspect to the crimes, Sacramento County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Belli said. They relied on a different website than they had in the OR search, and they did not seek a warrant for DeAngelo's DNA.
