Sarkis has been keeping an eye on the potential of Amazon selecting Boston.

The Seattle-based company announced Tuesday that it will bring 2,000 new technology jobs into the city in fields that include robotics, cloud computing and machine learning. This will allow the company to double its tech workforce in the Boston metropolitan area.

The company is opening a 430,000-square-foot office in WS Development's Seaport Square project - a 7.6 million-square-foot development along the waterfront.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker and Democratic Boston Mayor Marty Walsh both praised the announcement, with Walsh calling it a "tremendous vote of confidence" in the city's economy. Boston is also a finalist in the running to host the company's second headquarters.

Amazon has announced it will expand its Vancouver tech hub with a new office that will bring 3,000 new jobs to the city. Candidates interested in applying for open roles at Amazon's Vancouver Tech Hub can do it here.

City and state officials have shared few details of their HQ2 talks with Amazon, but have signaled little willingness to pony up the kind of massive subsidy package being offered by other contenders such as Maryland and New Jersey.

The online retail giant uses its Boston base to focus on developing its digital assistant Alexa, as well as Amazon Web Services and audiobook seller Audible. Additionally in Vancouver, the human resources technology team helps build the HR, recruiting and employee management software systems that support Amazon's global workforce of over 560,000 employees. To date, more than 16,000 Amazonians have used the job-retraining program globally. The company now employs about 1,200 workers in technology development offices in the region.

Dougherty says the current structure's architectural features will be preserved, and the tower is expected to open in 2022.

Since 2011, Amazon has invested over $400 million in MA, from building customer fulfillment infrastructure and research facilities to compensation to its teams.

The so-called "Amazon Effect" could increase rent if the city is chosen. Amazon already has a large pressence in Canada eploying over 6,000 people. Over the past five years, the company has invested more than $100 billion in the USA, including corporate offices, development and research centers, fulfillment infrastructure, and compensation to its employees.
