Opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan: The man who took down Armenia's prime minister

We will remind that on April 26 the opposition parliamentary faction "EFC" was nominated for the post of Prime Minister the candidacy of its Chairman Nikol Pashinyan.

Pashinyan earlier met with members of his Elk faction.

It is expected that the national Assembly of Armenia will vote for a new Prime Minister on may 1, Pashinyan will declare new parliamentary elections, which according to the Armenian Constitution could be held within two months.

"I think this energy has transformed [into] something great in Armenia", he added, commenting on the peaceful protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian on April 23.

He pledged to do no "personnel purges" if he was elected prime minister. "Armenia, Russia is always there for you", the diplomat said.

"People should have genuine possibilities to influence the political situation and political decisions", Pashinyan said on Monday.

The European Union expressed support to Armenia in "its efforts to build a prosperous and democratic society".

Tens of thousands of opposition supporters rallied in the capital Yerevan on Sunday, hoping that a massive show of strength would propel their leader to power. The "EFC" in Parliament to nine seats.

During a rally on Sunday in Yerevan's Republic Square, Pashinyan declared his readiness to take up the post of Armenia's prime minister "in a responsible manner".

Pashinyan said at consultations with the Republican faction that if elected, he will get into details of the negotiating process in the shortest possible period of time.

The protest movement had accused him of a power grab, saying he had failed to tackle a litany of problems like corruption, poverty and the influence of oligarchs.
