John Peterson soars into Quail Hollow lead behind pair of eagles

His comeback is compelling from a sporting perspective but Tiger Woods' resurgence is like gold dust for golf's PGA Tour

His comeback is compelling from a sporting perspective but Tiger Woods' resurgence is like gold dust for golf's PGA Tour

Woods will be chasing only his second victory at Quail Hollow after winning the title in 2007. It was his putter. He needed 31 putts in the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship. He's T-35 with a group so large it would be incredibly wasteful to list them all, and though he was smiling after the round, it had to sting a bit to waste an efficient tee-to-green afternoon. "They feel springy and they feel fast, especially when I'm walking on them, but they're not putting that way. I'm just kind of playing golf".

Woods was meeting him there after fulfilling his media obligations to figure out what went wrong with the flat stick Thursday during an even-par round of 71 that should have been in the 60s.

The course has been a thorn in Woods' side for some time now, as he missed the cut the last two times he played there. The 14-time major champion hit both his driver and his irons well - something that hasn't been a given since his multiple back issues - and instead struggled with a part of his game that has always come somewhat naturally.

One thing Woods most definitely can do is pull in the crowds and there will be a large contingent hoping the 42-year-old can end an 11-year drought in Charlotte.

Woods got off to a consistent start with three straight pars before bogeying the fourth. A lot more bunkers are in play. He found another red number on the par-4 eighth where he knocked in a 28-footer for birdie. "That's for sure. It's longer, but it's also more hard". Woods ran his 15-foot birdie try past the hole at 16 and had a pitiful lag birdie putt off the green at 17 that left him 17 feet for his par.

On a day when two-times Wells Fargo victor Rory McIlroy started with a smooth three-under-par 68, John Peterson made consecutive eagles for a sizzling 65 to take the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina. The closing three holes, dubbed the Green Mile, is an 1,170-yard stretch of nasty that can send a player packing in a hurry after missing the 36-hole cut. "We're all going to be close", Woods said.

Woods hasn't played here since 2012 and this was largely a re-acclimation day for Woods and caddie Joe LaCava, who got a jumpstart by arriving to Charlotte on Sunday. I think you can see the Tiger effect in plenty of the tournaments that he's been at, from ticket sales to the amount of people viewing on TV. Last year's PGA final round drew a 3.6 overnight TV rating, the second-lowest since at least 1995 according to Sports Media Watch.

Tiger Woods' tee time today: Woods will tee off at 12:50 p.m.
