North Korea will reportedly free three Americans held prisoner

Mr Kim said at last week's summit that he would discuss details of denuclearisation at the North Korea-US summit, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said, citing South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung Gyon.

US President Donald Trump has told the Pentagon to consider options for troop reductions in South Korea, media said, referring to officials familiar with the matter.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she could not confirm that the detainees would be released during a White House press briefing Thursday afternoon.

The letter came amid reports that the White House was looking at Singapore and a facility inside the Korean peninsula's demilitarized zone as possible sites for Trump's anticipated meeting with Kim.

Early Thursday, reports emerged that North Korea was to release three U.S. prisoners at some point in the day.

Trump has promised to ensure that North Korea does not get the capability to build a nuclear bomb that can hit the mainland United States. He suggested there might be more information about their situation soon. "Stay tuned!" the president wrote.

The North Korean leader, who took power in 2011, had never met with top officials of any country before this year.

The three citizens- Kim Dong-chul, Kim Sang-duk and Kim Hak-song - were freed from a labor camp and given health care and ideological indoctrination in Pyongyang, according to a report in the Financial Times.

Even as Washington presses for the release of the three American prisoners, the parents of a usa college student who died a year ago soon after being release from captivity in North Korea have sued Pyongyang over their son's death, saying Otto Warmbier was "brutally tortured and murdered".

Separate from the negotiations aimed at curtailing Pyongyang's nuclear program and ending hostilities between the two Koreas, Seoul and Washington have been renegotiating the cost-sharing agreement for basing us troops in South Korea, which expires at the end of the year. However, she added, "The welfare and safety of US citizens overseas is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State". Trump has repeatedly claimed that South Korea does not pay enough.

A fourth American detainee, Otto Warmbier, died in June 2017 - just days after he was repatriated to the USA with severe brain damage. He had been teaching accounting at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology known as PUST.

China grudgingly went along with Washington's demand past year that it support United Nations sanctions meant to deny the North of critical foreign currency.
