Uh, Maybe Change Your Passwords — Twitter to Everyone

Twitter: no big deal, but everyone needs to change their password

Twitter: no big deal, but everyone needs to change their password

The security announcement comes after the company discovered a bug that left passwords stored in unencrypted form in internal logs. The social network company began advising users late in the afternoon with an advisory, email messages sent to registered addresses, and of course, via Twitter itself. We've fixed, see no indication of breach or misuse, and believe it's important for us to be open about this internal defect. So if you're a Twitter user or are one of the GitHub users who received a notification, you should change your password on the affected services-as well as anywhere else you may have used the password.

Twitter last week reported its second consecutive quarterly profit, boosting the outlook for the platform after years in the red.

The glitch was in an internal system that was supposed to replace passwords with a randomised string of text for use in internal logs, but spat them out in plain text instead.

"This allows our systems to validate your account credentials without revealing your password", said Agrawal. However, the glitch caused passwords to be written into the company's internal computer system before the hashing process was completed.

Twitter recommended on Thursday that all of its 336 million users change their passwords after it discovered a bug that internally stored the passwords in an unprotected manner.

This guide walks you through the steps of changing the Twitter account password.

You can read Twitter's take on the issue here.

"Guys, all of our twitters have been hacked a long time ago", Twitter user Stephen Miller wrote. As a result, a number of Twitter accounts were identified for extra protection.

You might also want to consider enabled two-factor authentication. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment from this news organization.

While Twitter made the recommendation out of an "abundance of caution" it noted explicitly that its investigation to date has not found any evidence that any of the at-risk passwords were actually obtained by unauthorized parties or otherwise compromised.
