Cambridge Analytica kept Facebook data models until 2017

Cambridge Analytica ordered to release data on US voter

Cambridge Analytica ordered to release data on US voter

The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office has ordered Cambridge Analytica to release all the personal information and data it has on an American voter, opening the way for as many as 240 million US voters to request their data back from the political consulting firm that had ties to the Trump campaign, The Guardian reports.

The watchdog group is backing Professor David Carroll's efforts to obtain his personal data from SCL Group, which includes Cambridge Analytica.

The ICO issued the order on Friday, giving the organisation 30 days to comply, saying it was a "criminal offence" if it went ignored. According to The Guardian, Cambridge Analytica said Carroll had no more rights "than a member of the Taliban sitting in a cave in the remotest corner of Afghanistan".

Dissatisfied that he had been given all of the personal data held about him by the company, or an explanation of where the data had come from, Carroll complained to ICO. "There's a lot of questions that no one has been able to answer until now so hopefully this will be a major breakthrough in our understanding of what it did".

The decision paves the way for tens of millions of Americans to demand the return of their personal data under British data protection laws.

Cambridge Analytica, the company mired in the middle of Facebook's user privacy scandal, may be shutting down and filing for bankruptcy, but its problems are far from over.

"The company has consistently refused to cooperate with our investigation into this case and has refused to answer our specific enquiries in relation to the complainant's personal data", Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said. Trump's election campaign had hired Cambridge Analytica to provide data that would prove relevant to the campaign itself, and it is believed that the illegally harvested data had played a role in the successful campaign that saw Trump elected to the United States' highest elected office.

While this decision was extremely painful for Cambridge Analytica's leaders, they recognize that it is all the more hard for the Company's dedicated employees who learned today that they likely would be losing their jobs as a result of the damage caused to the business by the unfairly negative media coverage. Mark Zuckerberg told Congress that Cambridge Analytica "represented to us" that it has deleted all data models based on the original raw data of Facebook users in 2016, while Cambridge Analytica's lawyers had previously said the data had been erased by September 2016.
