WATCH: May bank holiday set to be hottest on record

At 10.53am, the Met Office Tweeted: "BREAKING NEWS we've just smashed the temperature record for the warmest early May Bank Holiday Monday, with 24.2 °C at Herstmonceux".

The record since the bank holiday was introduced in 1978 is 23.6C, and the record for the whole of the weekend is 28.6C.

He said: "Swathes of Britain are about to enjoy a warm and settled Bank Holiday weekend". However, it's looking like a most of us will get to see some warm sunshine at times'.

Bookmaker Coral has cut the odds on this month seeing the hottest May Day Bank Holiday Monday ever recorded to 6-4 from 2-1.

Most of England and Wales will be "around the low to mid 20s mark", Powell added.

But forecasters warn the warm sunshine will lead to higher than normal levels of UV radiation, meaning a risk of sunburn.

That would easily make it the hottest Mayday holiday since records began.

Other forecasters claimed the sweltering temperatures could reach 29C in some parts of the United Kingdom on Monday.

The heatwave is being caused by hot air arriving from 30C southern Russian Federation, the Met Office said - weeks after "Beast from the East" cold air from the same region froze Britain.

He said: 'It should be a relatively easy journey in terms of the impacts from weather'.

On Sunday, the mercury hit 22.3C in Edinburgh and 20.8C in Katesbridge in County Down - making for the hottest day of 2018 in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The return to warm and sunny weather follows very wet weather in southern and eastern England earlier this week.
