Attorney General Jeff Sessions to Visit US-Mexico Border in San Diego

Attorney General Jeff Sessions speaking at the National Association of Attorneys General Winter Meeting in Washington

Sessions was in San Diego with Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deputy Director Thomas D. Homan to discuss the latest enforcement efforts being undertaken by the Trump administration.

"We are not going to let this country be invaded".

Monday's announcement came about a week after hundreds of Central American migrants traveled to the San Ysidro, Calif., port of entry seeking asylum following a monthlong caravan through Mexico. "But we can not take everyone on this planet who is in a hard situation".

The attorney general said he has sent 35 prosecutors to that region to work on those cases. Trump himself was in Otay Mesa in March to survey prototypes of the border wall, which was a cornerstone of his presidential campaign. It also could put thousands more immigrants in detention facilities and children in shelters, and is likely to strain an immigration system that has struggled to keep up with a surge in enforcement under President Trump.

According to the report, families that are detained for illegal crossings have typically been kept together in the past.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen viewed Calexico's replacement border barrier project on April 18. Later that month, Vice President Mike Pence addressed Homeland Security and Border Patrol employees at the El Centro Border Patrol Station about plans for a new border wall and to call for tougher enforcement measures.

"When respect for the rule of law diminishes, so too does our ability to protect our great nation, its borders and its citizens", Sessions said last week. "We are dealing with a massive influx of illegal aliens across our Southwest Border".
