It was one of the largest Israeli military operations in recent years and its biggest such raid against Iranian targets, the military said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused on Thursday Iran of crossing a "red line" in its attack against Israel from Syria. The Golan Heights region borders Syria.

"They want to build a second Hezbollah-stan", he said, referring to the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group that last fought a war with Israel in 2006.

Another possibility is Iran will again take a more active role against Israel through Syria, through Lebanon in an attempt to show that it will not cave in to American pressure. It is not known if any of the foreign nationals killed were Iranian. "We have seen a demonstration of the IDF's intelligence and airpower capabilities", he added about the retaliatory strikes, according to the Post.
